Who are you?
That is really what this class is about: You.
Your inheritance.
What you have inherited from those who came before you has a profound influence on who you are today. Granted, you can choose to be different – to walk away from your inheritance – but even that is difficult unless you know what it is that you have inherited. In other words, you can’t walk away from something if you don’t know what it is or where to find it.
With that in mind, what are some of the things you inherited that influence who you are today?
Genetics, certainly.
Your religious faith, even if that means your ambivalence or opposition to religion.
Wealth, or the lack of it, sure.
Culture.
Through this course you will discover that European History – not the dates or events so much as the ideas that influenced or were influenced by those dates and events – are no less profoundly part of your inheritance, part of who you are, no matter where you are or where you are from in the world. Until you really know these ideas you will never be able to answer the question that is so much more important to your life than it even is for this class: Who Are You?
Despite what you may think you know about that subject, I’m willing to bet you don’t. And I’m further willing to bet that by the time we finish this course – this adventure, this exploration of self – you’re going to agree with me.
